The Channels of Urgell

The "Espai Cultural dels Canals d´Urgell" (Cultural Space of the Channels of Urgell) is much more than a museum over the water. Located in a building made by the engineer Domènec Cardenal during the years 1867 and 1876, the Espai keeps a, new and modern cultural equipment devoted to show a reality with different facets of the natural and human features of this lands, completely transformed by the construction of the channels of Urgell.

It is not and exaggeration to say that the construction of the channels was an epic work. Only five centuries of obstinacy made possible to the inhabitants of Urgell to transform their dreams into reality: make the water be there!

In the Espai Cultural dels Canals d´Urgell, man and water are the leading thread to understand the meaning and the history of the lands that are irrigated by the channels.

The construction of the channel was, in its moment, one of the most important works of hydraulic engineering over the world. The irrigation produced a deep revolution: not only were the regions able to change the products the harvest, but also the features of the landscape and the lives of its people changed.
